For an Adelaide appliance question, keep the hardness value with its full unit and the place it describes. A number copied from a search result can lose both. SA Water's suburb profile is a better starting point than a citywide label, although a profile still needs a reporting period before it can answer a household question.
Read the whole hardness unit
SA Water defines hardness as calcium and magnesium expressed as a calcium-carbonate equivalent, and says levels above 200 mg/L can cause scale. Read SA Water's hardness definition.
The words after the number belong to the result. A value reported as mg/L of calcium-carbonate equivalent should stay in that form when you copy it into a note or send it to an appliance supplier. Calling it simply a calcium reading changes what the label says. It also makes the result harder for the recipient to match to the original parameter.
SA Water separately lists hardness expressed in German degrees. Its German-degree parameter page identifies that unit but supplies no numerical conversion. A German-degree value and an mg/L value therefore need their unit labels retained before comparison. We have calculated no conversion or equipment setting here.
If a dishwasher manual asks for a different unit, use the manufacturer's conversion instructions or ask the supplier to interpret the complete utility result. Keep the original entry as well as any converted value. That leaves a way to check a setting later without reconstructing which unit someone meant.

Match the profile to place and period
SA Water's profile application asks for a suburb or postcode. It describes summary and appliance information covering the previous 12 months. Open the drinking-water profile application.
Search for the accommodation's actual suburb, then keep the returned area's name with the result. The broad word Adelaide is not an address match. If the tool offers a fuller report, look for the parameter name, unit and date interval there before passing on a screenshot cropped to a single number.
A previous-12-month summary is a description of that reporting window. It cannot be relabeled as a measurement taken from your kitchen tap today. Check whether the displayed figure is an average or a range, and preserve whichever description the report uses. A minimum-to-maximum range and an average answer different questions; neither label should disappear when a result is shared.
No selected-suburb profile result was obtained for this article, so it gives no measured Adelaide hardness range or property value. An address result should come from the actual lookup or a provider response, with its own dates attached.

Use a hardness band for its stated purpose
National drinking-water guidance puts 200 to 500 mg/L as calcium carbonate in an increasing-scaling band; that entry is marked endorsed in 1996. NHMRC's hardness guidance.
That is a classification band for interpreting scaling, not a measured range for Adelaide. Its endpoints should never be copied into a local water report as though the utility sampled them. Nor does matching a hardness band establish the overall safety of water at an individual tap.
For travel context, start with the Adelaide city guide. If the next question is about equipment, the pitcher-filter and softener comparison separates those products' purposes. Bring the complete local profile and the appliance's own instructions to a purchase or setting decision. The source pages here were checked on 15 October 2026; their access date is not a new sampling date.
