Munich’s drinking-water protection starts with land around the places where SWM collects water. The utility describes farming, forestry and protection areas there. Reading those pages means keeping the preventive work separate from the water’s treatment and the condition of pipes inside a building. A landscape photograph alone cannot answer either of those latter questions.
Start with the abstraction areas
SWM names the Mangfalltal, Loisachtal and Munich gravel plain as its three abstraction areas. The gravel plain is described as a reserve used for demand peaks or a possible outage elsewhere. Its account follows water from the collection areas through underground pipes to reservoirs south of Munich. SWM’s supply description.
That gives the protection story a location beyond the city centre. It does not identify the source mix reaching a particular flat today. Keep the names of the collection areas attached to claims about land management; a photograph of greenery somewhere near Munich would not do that job.
Protecting land before abstraction
SWM supports organic farming in the Mangfalltal abstraction catchment through its Ökobauern initiative. It says participating farms follow organic-farming rules and avoid synthetic chemical pesticides. The municipal forestry service manages the protection forest in the Mangfalltal and Munich gravel-plain abstraction areas on SWM’s behalf. SWM’s protection page.
These are descriptions of protection measures, not results from a tap. They explain actions intended to protect the source environment. They do not tell a reader that every nearby farm participates, that no substance ever enters the catchment, or that the programme replaces monitoring.
SWM says protection areas surround its abstraction facilities. Its explanation still describes the third zone at Reisach-Gotzing-Thalham as planned. That wording does not establish that the proposed zone has since been legally designated. The page was read on 14 October 2026 and displays no publication date. Use the original zone explanation for its stated status, rather than redrawing a current legal boundary from this article.

What protection does not measure
Land-management information and analytical results answer different questions. SWM’s quality page explains that its displayed minimum and maximum values cover 95% of measured results. The same page directs people seeking a private water analysis to its laboratory. SWM’s analysis guidance.
That statistical explanation is useful when opening a report, but the landing page alone does not give a sampling period for each parameter. No current private-tap result was obtained for this article. Nor does a forest-management description establish which treatment, if any, a particular volume of water received on its way into distribution.
Munich’s health department places the building installation under the responsibility of the property owners and names the property manager as the first contact for quality complaints. SWM delivers and is responsible for water quality up to the house connection. The city’s building guidance.
For accommodation questions, separate the catchment description from the property’s records. Ask which installation is involved and what evidence addresses the concern. Our Munich tap-water guide gives broader visitor context; it is not a test certificate for a room.
