Acea explains that nasoni take their name from the distinctive shape of their spouts. These small public drinking-water outlets can make a convenient refill stop between Rome's sights. Use the utility's current nasoni guide and finder to plan stops along your walk.
A public service with a long history
In a release dated 19 March 2024, Acea dates the first cast-iron nasoni to 1874, under Mayor Luigi Pianciani. It describes their expansion as a network for free public use. See the 150th-anniversary account for that history. It is not a current opening list.
Choose a stop near your next destination and keep an alternative in mind. Acea describes traditional nasoni as continuously flowing, while noting that some have timed taps. Check the control and operating instructions at the intended outlet. The utility's current guide describes both arrangements.

Finding a refill point
Acea's current nasoni page has an address search and a mobile-location option for finding nearby drinking-water points. We have not checked today's operation of individual mapped outlets. Check the signs and conditions when you arrive:
- Read any closure or drinking-water notice before refilling.
- Find the intended spout rather than using water collected in a basin.
- Keep your bottle opening away from the outlet and avoid touching it to the spout.
- If the outlet is damaged, obstructed or marked unavailable, move to another point.
These checks do not test the water. A photograph, a traditional shape or a busy location cannot override a posted restriction. An accommodation concern also needs information about the property; a fountain's appearance cannot answer it.

The supply behind the spout
Acea says Rome's drinking fountains receive the same supply water as household taps. That public-supply connection is not a sample result for a particular bottle or building. See the supply explanation in the nasoni guide.
Acea Ato 2 provides a water-quality map with address or postcode searches. Its downloadable chemical-analysis sheets summarize average values for the 12 months preceding the month shown on the sheet. Check that date and scope in the utility's water-quality information. A rolling average cannot replace a current notice about a service disruption.
Another kind of refill stop
Acea's Water Houses are urban dispensers offering free still and sparkling drinking water, with their own location finder. They are a different refill option from the traditional nasone. Use the official Water Houses page to find one along your route and check the dispenser's instructions on arrival.
Bring a bottle that fits under the outlet and follow its manufacturer's care guidance. Our Rome tap-water guidance covers the broader accommodation and traveler question. For a trip, check current local notices alongside your refill plan.
A bottle for refill stops
If you need one, compare capacity, opening size and manufacturer care instructions. No bottle purchase verifies the condition of a refill point.
