A day of walking in Paris is easier to plan when you know where to refill your bottle. Save a fountain near your starting point and another near a planned break. You can then fit a refill into the day instead of making a detour with an empty bottle.
Find a stop along your route
Start with Eau de Paris's official fountain map. The page includes an embedded map and a link to open it full screen. Save the locations while you have a connection, and check garden access if a fountain sits inside a park or garden.
Keep one alternative nearby. A map helps you find the fountain, but you will still need to check its notices and outlet when you get there.

Recognise the drinking outlet
Paris has several drinking-fountain designs, including the sculptural Wallace fountains, Mât Source and Arceau. Eau de Paris describes Mât Source as suitable for filling bottles and accessible to children and people with reduced mobility. Its illustrated fountain guide helps you recognise the different designs.
Use the intended drinking outlet, not a decorative pool. If it is damaged, blocked or marked unavailable, move on to your alternative. Hold the bottle opening clear of the spout, and leave space for anyone waiting to refill.

Find sparkling water if you prefer it
Some Paris fountains dispense chilled water with added carbon dioxide. The city's sparkling-fountain guide, updated on 27 March 2026, lists locations and notes that some fountains are unavailable. Treat that as a dated guide, not a promise that a particular fountain will be operating on your visit.
An ordinary drinking fountain makes a useful alternative if your chosen sparkling fountain is closed. If you fill with sparkling water, follow your bottle manufacturer's instructions about suitable contents and closing the bottle for carrying.
Allow for winter closures
Eau de Paris shuts some fountains in winter to protect them from freezing and to carry out maintenance. Its 16 April 2026 reopening notice describes spring checks, including replacing taps and making other repairs. That notice records that spring's work, so check again shortly before an autumn or winter trip. A summer photograph is no guide to winter opening.
Participating businesses provide another refill option. Look for the blue window sticker described in the city's refill-scheme guidance. Passersby can request a free refill without buying anything. Check that the business is open and ask the staff politely; being listed on a map does not establish today's opening hours.
This guide covers public refills. For water at your hotel or rental, see our Paris tap-water guidance.
A bottle for your refill routine
If you need a bottle, compare size, closure and care instructions. Check the manufacturer’s guidance before using it for sparkling water.
