Frankfurt's public water supply involves an upstream provider and a local network owner and operator. The city's FAQ names Hessenwasser as the water-procurement organisation, Mainova as the concession holder and distribution-network owner, and Netzdienste Rhein-Main, or NRM, as the network operator appointed by Mainova. Frankfurt's explanation of responsibility.
These names answer different questions. You might encounter Mainova when checking the household supply, then Hessenwasser on an analysis or regional transport description. That can be consistent with the published arrangements. There is no need to decide which name is the "real" supplier before reading what each organisation does.
Before water enters the local network
Frankfurt's FAQ describes Hessenwasser's procurement tasks as water abstraction and treatment at works, purchases from third parties, transport and storage. It says Mainova and NRM obtain the required drinking water from Hessenwasser. The procurement role therefore includes more than water produced at Hessenwasser's own sites. Read the city's upstream role description.
Hessenwasser's own regional page names Frankfurt among the cities receiving its water directly or indirectly. It describes wells, springs and tunnels across its supply area. This supports the regional supply relationship; it does not identify the source mix reaching one Frankfurt building today. Hessenwasser's supply description.
If you want the origin for a particular address, ask for the relevant supply area and reporting period. A provider's regional list can establish where it works while leaving the route to your accommodation unresolved. A statement about the region should keep that geographic scope when you repeat it.

The handover and the street network
Mainova's water-transport educational page describes regional transport to handover points, usually drinking-water reservoirs in the urban distribution network. It then describes Mainova taking over supply through elevated reservoirs at Frankfurt's edge, with NRM maintaining the local pipes. Mainova's transport and distribution explanation.
This is a description of how the organisations' responsibilities fit together. It supplies no timestamped flow record for your street. Treat an illustrated pipeline or a reservoir name as system context until a source connects it to the address and time you need.
Mainova's Aqua Classic page separately says the region's drinking water comes from wells, springs and tunnels and is provided for Mainova by Hessenwasser. The customer-facing name and the upstream provider appear together in Mainova's own account. Mainova's water-service page.

Check the address-level information
Mainova's quality page offers a Frankfurt address lookup using postcode, street and house number. It reports a supply-area hardness range of 4 to 20 °dH, depending on origin and mixing. That range is not the value for every address. No individual address result was obtained for this article. Open the Mainova lookup.
For a useful enquiry, provide the accommodation address and say whether you need a hardness setting, a dated quality report, or an explanation of the supply route. Ask which sampling point and collection period the answer covers. That keeps an address query from turning into a comparison of unrelated regional figures.
The linked general pages were read on 14 October 2026; their publication dates and any underlying measurement periods are unstated. They establish published roles, not current tap-test results or today's precise upstream blend. Our Frankfurt city guide offers travel guidance, and the water-notice guide explains what to check if a particular supply has an advisory.
